It is a fact that Christ saves, but we must understand why and how to fully appreciate the need He satisfies - the hole in our soul that He fills. It is a catchy song that riles up our emotions, but don't be drawn to it as a song of worship but rather a reflection.
Jesus was not lost and was strong, so strong that He bore the weight of all the sin in the world. Not that Dave is the Devil, but He has a keen understanding of the Devil's ways to try and weaken faith, and will use little ways of rhetoric and 'statements' to lessen faith in a mighty God who's ways are unseen by the lost. The whole song is from the Devil's perspective and through His lips. Since the Devil knew he was a failure, he tried to make it as bad as possible on Jesus hence the gruesome beatings (to say the least). Christ finished the task and the Devil failed. You see in order for the Devil to succeed, which He didn't, He would have had to weakend Christ's faith in Himself to save the world, which He did. Since Jesus doesn't save those who don't really desire to be saved (the Devil was just trying to tempt Jesus, He didn't love Christ, the Devil is proud and Hates God who is His enemy). Overall, pro Jesus and pro faith with out being pro religion, and in fact supporting self initiative. Jesus and faith have power to Dave in their existence and how people use them on an individual basis. I think Dave's describing Jesus remaining and icon and being a man of extreme importance without actually having to prove any ability to save or preform a miracle. Jesus knows, "every whispering wind and second counts" and has to advert the temptation. The narrator is opposing Jesus asking him for drink, bite to eat, a ride, and a conversation. He is also further describing the existence of Jesus and the temptation, speculation, and doubt surrounding his life. In this song, Jesus is the man walking through the desert and Dave as the narrator is representative of 1) those who cling to the idea of Jesus, maybe for the wrong reasons, in hopes they can "be saved" and 2) the distractions faced by Jesus Christ on his righteous journey.Īsking to be saved, the narrator describes the the desperation to people to "be saved." He describes people that aren't looking to prove the integrity of their savior, and people that are afraid they're too far gone, "to get back home." General CommentI think this song is 100% referencing Jesus Christ, but I see it a little differently than most:
